1. Narrowing your criteria, for example, may work against you:"Every time you answer a question you eliminate a possibility,"says one expert.

【分析】句子主干为Narrowing your criteria ... may work against you。for example为插入语；冒号后面的成分是对前面句子的解释说明。

【译文】例如，缩小搜索条件可能对求职者产生不利影响。一个专家说，“你每回答一个问题，就失去了一个做另外一种工作的机会”。

2. This, for those as yet unaware of such a disadvantage, refers to discrimination against those whose surnames begin with a letter in the lower half of the alphabet.

【分析】复合句。句子主干为this... refers to discrimination。主语this和谓语refers to之间插入了介词短语for those…作状语，其中unaware of...作those的后置定语。宾语discrimination后的介词短语against those…作其后置定语，其中又包含whose引导的定语从句修饰those。

【译文】对于那些还没有意识到这个劣势的人而言，这种不公平就是指对那些姓氏字母排在字母表后半部分的人的歧视。

【分析】并列多重复合句。两个引号中是两个独立的分句，she says为插入语。在后一个分句中，that引导定语从句修饰service,该从句中又包含when引导的时间状语从句。

【译文】她说，“我是个很好的经济指示器，我所提供的服务在人们考虑省钱的时候就不需要了”。

4. Many consumers seem to have been influenced by stock-market swings, which investor snow view as a necessary ingredient to a sustained boom.

【分析】复合句。句子主干为Many consumers seem to have been influenced。by引出动作的发出者；which引导定语从句，修饰stock-market swings,其中含有view ...as “把…看作”结构。

【译文】许多消费者似乎受到了股市波动的影响，但投资者现在却把这种波动看作持续增长的必要条件。
