The New Zealand market finished the day 5 percent down, tracking steep falls across Asia Pacific markets, which have been rattled by fears of a sharper than anticipated global slowdown.

The benchmark NZX 50 was down 139.95 points or 5.06 percent to 2764.688 at the end of trading.

Optimism about the stabilization in money markets has been swept aside and widespread selling of global equities has resumed in earnest, as markets reacted to a dire performance on Wall Street, downbeat US economic data and fears of a deeper expected global expected recession.

"Its obviously been a disappointing day. We thought we had passed the volatility and big falls, but clearly that wasn't the case today," ABN Amro senior dealer Bryon Burke said.

In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 was down 298.1 points, or 6.9 percent to 4001.9 in afternoon trading.

Japan's Nikkei average plunged over 10 percent to 8,591.59 in the morning session, while South Korea's KOSPI was down 6 percent.

The Hang Seng index in Hong Kong plummeted nearly 7 percent within minutes of the market opening.

The MSCI index of Asia-Pacific shares outside of Japan fell 3.35 percent, locked in a downtrend that had brought it to a near 4-year low last week.

Gloomy economic data and a warning from the US Federal Reserve sent the Dow Jones industrial average down 733.08 points, or 7.87 percent, at 8,577.91 overnight.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said credit market turmoil poses a "significant threat" to an already weak economy. He also said it will take some time to restore normal credit flows and he pledged the US central bank would continue to act aggressively to fight the crisis.

Yesterday, the United States reported its biggest monthly decline in retail sales in more than three years, and Europe offered negative economic data and outlooks of its own.
