36. Creating a “European identity” that respects the different cultures and traditions which go to make up the connecting fabric of the Old Continent is no easy task and demands a strategic choice.
【译文】 不同文化和传统组成了连接欧洲大陆的纽带。创造一个尊重这些文化和传统的“欧洲统一认同”绝非易事，需要战略性选择。
【析句】 本句的主干为Creating a “European identity”…is no easy task and demands a strategic choice,that引导的限制性定语从句修饰前面的“European identity”,在这个定语从句中又包含which 引导的限制性定语从句，修饰前面的cultures and traditions，主语带有由连词and 连接的两个谓语动词“is no easy task”和“demands a strategic choice”,翻译本句时应注意定语从句的处理方法。

37. In dealing with a challenge on such a scale,it is no exaggeration to say, “United we stand,divided we fall”.
【译文】 应付一个如此规模的挑战时，我们可以毫不夸张地说，“团结，我们就会站起来；分裂，我们就会倒下去”。
【析句】 此句的结构比较简单，它是套用了美国总统肯尼迪的一句话：United,there is little we cannot do; divided,there is little we can do.（团结，我们无所不能；分裂，我们一事无成。）具体到此句中，united和divided两个过去分词实际上暗含两个条件，完整的句子应该是：If we are united,we stand. If we are divided,we fall.

38. Traditionally,legal learning has been viewed in such institutions as the special preserve of lawyers,rather than a necessary part of the intellectual equipment of an educated person.
【译文】 传统上，在加拿大的高等学府里，学习法律一直被看作是律师的专门工作，而不是一个受过良好教育的人所必须具备的知识素养。
【析句】 主干结构是一个被动语句（legal learning has been viewed as… rather than…），in such institutions作状语，从前文看是指Canadian universities。
